Ghana Card to Become Mandatory for Motor Insurance from January 2026

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced that, starting January 1, 2026, the Ghana Card will be mandatory for purchasing or renewing all motor insurance policies.

The move is part of efforts to strengthen regulation and combat fraud in the insurance sector.

In a public notice, the Commission stated that the directive applies to all motorists nationwide. Corporate clients will also be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) when completing motor insurance transactions.

“The National Insurance Commission (NIC) wishes to inform all motorists that, effective January 1, 2026, the Ghana Card will be required for all motor insurance purchases or renewals,” the notice said. “Corporate clients must also provide their TIN when conducting motor insurance transactions.”

The NIC explained that the measure aims to improve the efficiency and integrity of insurance operations, particularly in identity verification.

The initiative is expected to enhance claims processing, strengthen Know-Your-Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance, reduce fraud, and align Ghana with global financial standards.

Motorists have been directed to present their Ghana Card at all insurance outlets, while corporate clients are urged to have their TIN details ready to avoid delays.

The Commission stressed that the policy is part of broader reforms to enhance transparency, protect policyholders, and modernise Ghana’s insurance industry.

The notice was signed by Acting Commissioner of Insurance Dr Abiba Zakariah, who reaffirmed the NIC’s commitment to regulation, consumer protection, and sector development.
