A violent mob on Thursday, December 11, stormed the Kwame Danso District Court in the Bono East Region, disrupted proceedings, vandalised property, and forcibly freed three accused persons who had just been remanded into police custody.
The incident has triggered nationwide outrage, with the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) calling for the immediate closure of the court until adequate security measures are put in place.
According to reports from the Kumasi Mail, tensions escalated around 8:00 a.m. when a large group of youths massed at the Kwame Danso Police Station to protest the remand of the suspects in The Republic v. Isaac Kwabena Mintah & 2 Others.

The three were facing charges of causing unlawful damage, stealing, and assault under the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
After the court ordered them into custody, the agitated crowd moved to the court premises, where proceedings were still ongoing. The mob allegedly forced its way into the courtroom, chased away staff and litigants, damaged office equipment, and freed the suspects. Some court workers reportedly locked themselves inside offices as the attackers attempted to reach the magistrate’s chambers.
Police reinforcements from Atebubu eventually restored order. No injuries were reported, though staff were left traumatised.
In a statement, JUSAG condemned the attack, describing it as part of a worrying trend of assaults on judicial institutions in the area. The association has appealed to the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to temporarily shut down the Kwame Danso court until proper security is provided.
JUSAG has further directed its members to stay away from the facility until their safety is guaranteed and urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure the arrest and prosecution of all those involved.
The association also extended sympathy to affected staff, security officers and litigants.
Police investigations into the attack and the escape of the three suspects are currently underway.
