Mahama Has No Third-Term Agenda; It’s An Absurd Fantasy – Kwakye Ofosu

Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has strongly dismissed claims that President John Dramani Mahama harbours intentions of seeking a third term in office, describing the allegations as baseless and misleading.

His response comes after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) alleged that President Mahama is nurturing a secret plan to pursue a third term, despite Ghana’s constitutional two-term limit for presidents.

According to the NPP, some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters and social media activists have been advocating for Mahama to remain in office beyond the permitted limit, citing recent online commentary.

Appearing on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, December 9, hosted by Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr Kwakye Ofosu rejected the claims outright.

“The NPP has whipped itself into a needless frenzy. President Mahama has stated emphatically that he will respect the Ghanaian Constitution. Because he’s a consummate democrat, there’s no third term anywhere for him or any other person as far as the constitution is concerned.”
he said.

He added that the opinions of individuals on social media do not translate into government policy or presidential intention.

“Anyone can say what they want. The fact that some people have gone on Facebook to say he should go for a third term doesn’t mean that will happen. The man himself has said he’s not interested.”

Mr Kwakye Ofosu urged the NPP to avoid what he described as needless speculation and manufactured outrage.

“So NPP should stop wasting their time and everybody’s time and purporting to be angry. It’s an absurd fantasy they’re getting themselves into. The President has not expressed any intent. Any talk about it is a complete waste of everybody’s time.”
he stated.

President John Dramani Mahama has previously reiterated his position on the matter. On August 27, he reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s constitutional two-term presidential limit, stressing that he would not appear on the 2028 ballot.

During a bilateral meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on a three-day state visit, President Mahama argued that stepping aside after his constitutionally permitted term would bolster fiscal discipline and curb the recurring election-year overspending that has plagued Ghana’s economy.

He criticised the practice where some incumbent governments circumvent fiscal rules to gain electoral advantage, a trend he believes weakens economic stability and public trust.

The government maintains that President Mahama has no interest in seeking a third term and remains committed to upholding Ghana’s democratic principles.
