NDC Wants Overwhelming Majority To Amend Constitution – Oppong Nkrumah

Ofoase Ayirebi MP Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of pursuing a deliberate and coordinated plan to secure an overwhelming parliamentary majority in order to push through constitutional amendments.

His allegation comes in the wake of heightened tensions in Parliament on Tuesday, December 9, after Minority MPs blocked Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga from responding to their calls for the withdrawal of a letter declaring the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant.

Minority MPs clad in black banged on tables, chanted, and disrupted proceedings, prompting a temporary suspension of the sitting.

The controversy was triggered by a December 4 letter from the Clerk of Parliament to Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa, formally notifying her of a vacancy in the Kpandai Constituency following a High Court ruling that annulled the election.

The minority has rejected the letter as “out of place” and a breach of the rule of law.

Addressing journalists, Oppong Nkrumah drew parallels between the current developments and what he described as politically motivated removals in the past.

He pointed to what he called a “pre-advertised agenda” to remove the Chief Justice when the NDC took office, alleging a similar plan is now being deployed to target the Electoral Commission’s leadership.

“There is a pre-advertised agenda to get rid of the EC commissioner and her deputies. It is being rolled out, and they will say it is procedure,” he stated.

“We are telling you if you still don’t believe it that there is a pre-advertised agenda to ensure that there is an overwhelming majority in this chamber for the purpose of constitutional amendments.”

Oppong Nkrumah emphasised that the Minority would continue to resist any attempts to compel the Speaker to declare the Kpandai seat vacant.

According to him, Speaker Alban Bagbin has already ruled on the matter, and no pressure should force a reversal.

“What we can do is to stand on our feet and draw Mr Speaker’s attention to the fact that he should not buckle to any pressure being put on him to declare that seat vacant because he has already made that ruling,” he asserted.
