OSP Fires Back: Kpebu Has a History of Disrespecting Security Personnel

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has pushed back against claims by private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu that his arrest on Wednesday, December 3, was unjustified, insisting he has a consistent record of disrespecting its security personnel.

In a detailed clarification issued by the OSP’s Director of Strategy, Research and Communications (SRC), Sammy Darko, the office said Mr Kpebu has on multiple occasions clashed with its security officers and later “misrepresented the facts” to the public.

“This is not the first or even the second time Mr Kpebu has acted improperly toward OSP security personnel in the discharge of their lawful duties,” Mr Darko said.

The rebuttal follows Mr Kpebu’s claims, after his release Wednesday evening, that his arrest was part of what he called a “suicide mission” being orchestrated by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.

The OSP firmly rejected suggestions that Mr Kpebu’s detention was linked to the ongoing inquiry into corruption allegations he has levelled against the Special Prosecutor.

“The confrontation at the OSP has nothing to do with the inquiry into the unsubstantiated allegations he made against the SP and the Office,” the clarification stated.

According to the OSP, the lawyer’s arrest followed his alleged use of abusive language against the security officers at the entrance and his refusal to comply with standard entry procedures.

The office also dismissed suggestions of excessive force or mistreatment, stressing that the arrest was conducted lawfully.

“He was informed of his arrest in accordance with the law. There is no internal record of any assault or mistreatment,” Mr Darko explained.

Despite the confrontation, the OSP says its investigation into Mr Kpebu’s corruption allegations will continue.

Mr Kpebu, who has been a vocal critic of the OSP’s investigative methods, is expected to report again at 11 a.m. today to assist with further enquiries.
