President John Dramani Mahama has directed contractors working on the Ofankor–Nsawam Road project to adhere strictly to timelines and ensure the long-awaited project is completed by the end of the second quarter of 2026.
The President gave the directive during a working visit to the construction site on Wednesday, September 3. Accompanied by the Minister of Roads and other officials, Mr Mahama expressed cautious optimism about the pace of work but underscored the urgent need to sustain progress given the project’s history of delays.
“I can see that drivers are happy now, and I hope that from now till you finish the project, you will maintain a smooth flow of traffic even as you are working so that you don’t impede the flow of traffic,” Mr Mahama told the contractors.

He stressed that the government would hold the contractors to their commitment: “You say by the end of the second quarter next year you should be finished, so we will hold you to your work.”
The Ofankor–Nsawam Road construction began in July 2022 under the Akufo-Addo administration, with an initial completion date set for July 2024. However, the project has missed multiple deadlines due to funding constraints and logistical challenges.
The persistent delays have triggered repeated outcries from motorists and residents who endure severe traffic congestion, dust pollution, and safety hazards along the route.
The Ofankor–Nsawam stretch, a major artery connecting Accra to key industrial and residential communities, has long been a bottleneck for commuters. Public frustration has grown in recent months, leading to protests and mounting criticism of the government’s handling of major road projects.
President Mahama’s renewed directive is therefore seen as a commitment to restoring public confidence and ensuring that one of Ghana’s most critical road networks is fixed on schedule.
The President noted that while significant progress has been made in recent weeks, consistency is crucial. He urged contractors to work efficiently without worsening congestion for road users.
