Ghana has not been affected by the United States government’s latest Green Card review and temporary immigration suspension, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has confirmed.
Speaking after a meeting with the Acting U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Rolf Olson, on Monday, December 1, 2025, Mr Ablakwa said he had received firm assurances that Ghana was not part of the countries targeted under the new immigration measures announced by President Donald Trump’s administration.
“The meeting covered a number of important issues relating to Ghana–U.S. relations, including confirmation that Ghana is not included in the latest immigration review,” the minister said. “Ghanaians should be assured that the new restrictions do not apply to our country.”

Mr Ablakwa also revealed that discussions touched on the restoration of five-year visas for Ghanaian travellers, a move long anticipated by citizens and stakeholders in the travel industry.
Additionally, he disclosed that the U.S. had withdrawn the 15 per cent tariffs previously imposed on cocoa, semi-processed cocoa, and other eligible Ghanaian agricultural exports.
“These are positive steps, and the government will continue to pursue agreements that deliver the best outcomes for Ghanaians,” he noted.
With Ghana preparing for major World Cup-related activities, the minister said both governments discussed arrangements for Ghanaian supporters, including travel facilitation and security measures.
He added that security cooperation under the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) was also reviewed. This will include enhanced intelligence sharing, joint training programmes, and U.S. aviation assets supporting certain operations, all coordinated with the relevant Ghanaian authorities.
Touching on trade, Mr Ablakwa said Ghana remained optimistic about ongoing discussions under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), stressing that the government will continue to advocate for mechanisms that support Ghana’s export competitiveness.
While the foreign minister’s assurance brings relief to many Ghanaians, public information from the U.S. indicates that no formal list of exempted countries has yet been published. Ghana does not appear among the countries affected by the new review; however, beyond Mr Ablakwa’s remarks, official U.S. confirmation is still pending.
