Asantehene to Brief President Mahama After Landmark Mediation Session on Bawku Conflict

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to formally brief President John Dramani Mahama on the just-ended mediation session aimed at securing lasting peace in the decades-old Bawku conflict.

President Mahama mandated the Asantehene earlier this year to lead a high-level peace process designed to resolve the long-standing tensions between the Kusaasi and Mamprusi factions, an assignment many viewed as a critical step toward stabilising the troubled municipality.

Monday, December 1, 2025, marked a major milestone, as both factions appeared before the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace for the first time since the mediation began, signalling a renewed commitment to dialogue.

Security was heightened around the palace, with both groups subjected to strict screening procedures before being escorted into the palace auditorium. The tightened security posture reflected the sensitivity of the discussions and the high expectations surrounding them.

Sources close to the meeting indicate that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II dedicated significant time to listening to detailed presentations from both sides. He reportedly urged calm, mutual respect, and continued restraint as the peace process advances. The Asantehene is also said to have assured the delegates of ongoing collaboration with the Presidency to address the concerns of both factions and to work toward a definitive resolution.

Outside the palace, crowds of supporters from both sides gathered throughout the day. Their initial celebrations following the session momentarily escalated into a confrontation, prompting a swift and coordinated response from police and military personnel. Additional security reinforcements were quickly deployed to restore order.

With Monday’s session completed, both factions now await an official announcement from the Manhyia Palace outlining the next steps in the peace roadmap. The Asantehene’s forthcoming briefing to President Mahama is expected to shape subsequent actions and determine how the mediation will proceed in the coming weeks.

The Bawku area, which has endured years of intermittent violence, curfews, and social disruptions, remains hopeful that this renewed momentum will pave the way for lasting stability and reconciliation.
