Otumfuo to Deliver Final Ruling on Bawku Chieftaincy Dispute Today

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to deliver the much-anticipated final ruling on the protracted Bawku chieftaincy dispute today, Monday, December 1, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace.

The decision is expected to be a landmark moment in efforts to resolve one of Ghana’s longest-running and most volatile conflicts.

President John Dramani Mahama tasked the Asantehene earlier this year to lead a comprehensive mediation process aimed at bringing lasting peace to Bawku, a municipality that has endured decades of recurring violence, deep-seated mistrust, and ethnic tension.

Otumfuo’s involvement began in April, when he hosted representatives of the feuding factions from April 28 to April 30, signalling a renewed national commitment to ending the conflict. Although talks were briefly suspended, mediation resumed on May 13, with the Asantehene noting that the engagements had contributed to a noticeable period of calm in the area.

The Manhyia Palace has described today’s meeting as the culmination of months of intensive dialogue, behind-closed-door consultations, and community-level peace appeals.

For many years, Bawku has been synonymous with intermittent gunfire, targeted killings, burning of homes, and prolonged curfews. These outbreaks of violence have:

  • Disrupted daily life and economic activity
  • Divided communities along entrenched lines
  • Triggered repeated security deployments
  • Hindered development and investment in the area

Attempts by successive governments, traditional authorities, civil society, and security agencies to resolve the conflict have yielded only temporary calm.

Residents, analysts, and peace advocates are watching Manhyia with keen interest. Many hope Otumfuo’s final pronouncement will chart a new path toward:

  • Long-term stability
  • Reconciliation between factions
  • Restoration of community relations
  • Sustained development of the Bawku enclave

The Asantehene, widely respected for his conflict-resolution record and authority in chieftaincy matters, is expected to deliver a ruling that will shape the future governance of Bawku and influence peace efforts in northern Ghana.

As the nation awaits today’s outcome, hopes are high that the decision will mark a turning point, finally ending the cycles of violence that have claimed lives, displaced families, and shattered the social fabric of Bawku for generations.
