A total of 136 suspects arrested during a joint police-military operation in the Ashanti, Ahafo, and Volta regions have been remanded into prison custody by the Tafo and Atasemanso Circuit Courts following recent attacks on personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The suspects—part of 486 individuals picked up during a large-scale security sweep in the Ahafo Region—were taken through a rigorous screening process, after which the 136 were arraigned. They are scheduled to reappear in court on November 28, 2025.
Officials say a number of those initially arrested were released on enquiry bail due to insufficient evidence. These included travellers who were forced off commercial vehicles and were able to present their tickets for verification, as well as juveniles, students, teachers, nurses, and other professionals picked up from their homes during the dawn operations.

Authorities also confirmed the detention of 21 foreign nationals who were intercepted while travelling. They will be transferred to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigation and possible repatriation.
With the Kumasi Central Prisons currently at full capacity, the police indicated that 132 of the remanded suspects will be transferred to the Sunyani Central Prisons. Arrangements are underway for their movement under heavy security escort using two Black Maria vehicles.
Last Wednesday’s dawn raids saw a coordinated deployment of police and military personnel across multiple locations, including:
- Dadwene, Obuasi, Anwona — Ashanti Region
- Ehi — Volta Region
- Hwediem, Kenyase, Goaso, Maharni — Ahafo Region
The operation resulted in over 400 arrests, all of them male, as part of efforts to clamp down on illegal mining-related violence and rising assaults on state officials working to curb environmental degradation.
