Ghana Armed Forces to Send SMS Notices in Batches of 600 as Recruitment Resumes on Thursday

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) will resume its halted recruitment exercise in the Greater Accra Region on Thursday, November 20, 2025, following last week’s tragic stampede that claimed six lives and left dozens injured at the El-Wak Stadium.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Department of Public Relations at General Headquarters, the screening process will now be conducted in strictly controlled batches of 600 applicants to prevent a recurrence of the November 12 disaster.

“All qualified applicants in batches of 600 persons will receive an SMS specifying their reporting dates, batches and designated centres,” the statement signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, said.

To enhance crowd management, the number of screening sub-centres in Greater Accra has been increased to eight across five locations:

  • El-Wak Stadium – 2 centres
  • Nicholson Park, Burma Camp – 2 centres
  • Air Force Base, Burma Camp – 1 centre
  • TRADOC, Teshie – 2 centres
  • Eastern Naval Command, Tema – 1 centre

Applicants who do not receive SMS notifications by Thursday are advised to call 0256405104 or message 0256405154 on WhatsApp for assistance. Updates will also be available on the recruitment portal.

To reduce congestion, the GAF strongly cautioned relatives and friends against escorting applicants to the centres. Non-applicants will not be allowed entry.

The 2025/2026 recruitment exercise was suspended after a deadly stampede erupted around 6:20 a.m. on November 12 at the El-Wak Stadium when a large crowd forced its way through security barriers before the scheduled screening.

All six persons who died were female applicants. Five other victims remain in intensive care, while twelve are in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital.

A Board of Inquiry tasked to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy is still ongoing. To ensure transparency, the entire Greater Accra recruitment team has been replaced.

The new officers overseeing the process include:

  • Commodore F.A. Nyarko – Director General, Human Resource
  • Colonel F. Kusi-Darko – Director, Manpower
  • Colonel G.B. Eduah – Director, Information Technology

The Ghana Armed Forces expressed deep regret over the loss of lives, extending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a swift recovery.

All injured applicants will continue to receive free medical care at the 37 Military Hospital until they are fully treated. The GAF has also announced a special recruitment package for the injured once they recover, as well as support for the families of the deceased.

The military assured the public that anyone found culpable after investigations will be sanctioned accordingly and urged the public to support the revised exercise for a smooth and safe process.
