Akufo-Addo Is the Most Impactful Politician of the Fourth Republic — Paul Adom-Otchere

Broadcast journalist and political commentator Paul Adom-Otchere has described former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the most impactful politician of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, crediting him with shaping the country’s democratic, legal, and media landscape over several decades.

Speaking in a one-on-one interview on the AM Show, Adom-Otchere said that while the former president may have made mistakes during his administration, his overall influence on Ghana’s democracy and political culture remains unparalleled.

“He may have made some mistakes, but after you look at it, I call him the most impactful politician of the Fourth Republic,” Adom-Otchere said.
“He was the politician who gave the biggest mobilisation, fought the most for press freedom, and defended parliamentary processes at critical moments in our democratic history.”

He cited Akufo-Addo’s long record of activism, from his early days as a lawyer and democracy advocate to his leadership roles in the People’s Movement for Freedom and Justice (PMFJ) and the Alliance for Change (AFC)—both of which fought against authoritarianism and championed constitutional rule.

Adom-Otchere also referenced Akufo-Addo’s parliamentary contributions, particularly his role as Chair of Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee, where he opposed attempts to undermine the 1992 Constitution and defended legislative independence.

According to the Good Evening Ghana host, Akufo-Addo’s 2016 electoral victory, which saw him defeat then-President John Mahama by the widest margin ever recorded under the Fourth Republic, further solidified his position in history.

“He still holds the record of having won by the largest margin as an opposition candidate coming into the ballot,” Adom-Otchere noted.

He added that beyond politics, Akufo-Addo’s influence on press freedom and political mobilisation makes him a defining figure of modern Ghanaian governance.

“His political resilience and contribution to democratic freedoms are unmatched. Whether one agrees with him or not, his impact on Ghana’s political evolution cannot be denied,” Adom-Otchere emphasised.
