Make Sign Language Mandatory in All SHSs – Nortsu Kotoe Tells Education Ministry

Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Education, Peter Nortsu Kotoe, has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to make sign language a compulsory subject in all Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country.

He made the call after attending the 20th anniversary and prize-giving ceremony of Sonrise Christian High School (SCHOSA) in Ho, Volta Region, where sign language is a mandatory course for all students.

Mr Nortsu Kotoe, who is also the Member of Parliament for Akatsi North, praised the initiative, noting its transformative social value.

“Just imagine how beneficial a medical officer who has the capacity to communicate fluently with dumb and deaf patients without an interpreter would be in society,” he said.

The legislator described SCHOSA’s approach as a model of inclusive education, stressing that making sign language compulsory nationally would promote equal opportunities and accessibility for persons with hearing impairments.

He also commended the school’s plans to introduce a technical and vocational department to equip students with practical, employable skills.

“It has been a long time since we departed from the idea of getting employed to becoming an employer,” Mr Nortsu Kotoe noted, encouraging students to pursue innovation and entrepreneurship.

Mr Nortsu Kotoe lauded private SHSs for complementing public education, saying their inclusion in the Free SHS Programme was vital for expanding access. He also applauded SCHOSA for maintaining academic integrity, with no record of examination malpractice, and for consistently producing disciplined, high-performing graduates.

The school’s founder and administrator, Joseph Dzamesi, recounted SCHOSA’s humble beginnings in 2005 with just 135 students, 11 staff members, and a makeshift dining hall, growing into a respected institution that competes with top public schools.

“We started small, but by God’s grace and discipline, we now produce excellent and responsible graduates serving humanity across sectors,” Mr Dzamesi said.
