Journalists, Entrepreneurs, and Trailblazers Among 824 New Lawyers Called to the Bar

A new generation of legal minds was ushered into Ghana’s legal fraternity on Friday, October 10, as 824 newly qualified lawyers were officially called to the Bar in a ceremony characterised by celebration, diversity, and determination.

Held at the Accra International Conference Centre, the event brought together judges, legal luminaries, families, and dignitaries to witness this significant milestone. The ceremony was led by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, who administered the professional oath and presented qualifying certificates to the inductees.

This year’s call to the Bar stood out for its diverse cohort, which included a notable presence of journalists and media professionals, reflecting the growing intersection between law and journalism in advancing national discourse and justice.

Among the inductees were Emmanuel Ebo Hawkson of Graphic Online, Serwaa Amihere of the EIB Network, Joseph Ackah-Blay of Media General, Sixtus Don-Ullo of 3News, and Yvonne Asare-Offei of GBC. Their transition from the newsroom to the courtroom underscores how legal training is increasingly being used to shape policy, accountability, and public service.

Also honoured during the ceremony were six persons with disabilities, who overcame significant challenges to earn their place in the legal profession, earning warm applause from the audience.

A particularly inspiring moment was the call to the Bar of Paul Chen, a Chinese-born entrepreneur based in Kumasi, whose journey reflects Ghana’s evolving and inclusive legal landscape.

“I was born in Taiwan, but I came to Ghana when I was young. I’m currently doing business in Kumasi, and I thought being a lawyer is a very useful thing to do,” Paul shared. “Legal education—knowledge—is a powerful tool. So I think it will help me with my business in Ghana.”

The ceremony drew dignitaries including Supreme Court Justice Avril Lovelace-Johnson, Attorney-General Dr Dominic Ayine, Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai, Director of Legal Education Prof Raymond Atuguba, and Ghana Bar Association President Efua Ghartey, all of whom participated in the presentation of certificates.
