The Kwasi Darfoh Oyoko Royal Family of Akwasiho has formally retracted a five-year-old publication in the Kwahu State Book which claimed ownership of Akwasiho lands, admitting that the information was inaccurate and misleading.
In a statement signed by Nana Aboagye Nketia II, Krontihene of Kwahu Pepease and custodian of Kwahu Akwasiho lands, and Abusuapanin Obeng Tawiah, Head of the Kwasi Darfoh Oyoko Royal Family, the family acknowledged that historical court rulings and traditional authority confirm that the Akwasiho lands belong to the Kwasi Ampoma Bretuo Royal Family, also known as the Asiedu Boafo Royal Family of Kwahu.

The retraction references a landmark Supreme Court ruling dated July 3, 1922, in the case of Kwasi Darfoh v. Kwasi Ampoma, presided over by Justice Kenneth James Beatty, which ruled in favour of the Bretuo Royal Family. The judgement was upheld by a review panel of the Supreme Court in March 1923, comprising C. R. Appton-Smyly (C.J.), R. E. Hall (J.), and L. I. Dalton (J.), which unanimously dismissed the Oyoko Family’s appeal.
Abusuapanin Obeng Tawiah, speaking on behalf of his family, appealed for reconciliation, stating:
“We humbly appeal to the true owners of the Akwasiho lands, the Asiedu Boafo Royal Family, to temper justice with mercy and forgive us for the publication that misrepresented the facts.”
The statement also revealed that the late Nana Obeng Darfoh II, Chief of Akwasiho, had discovered the error before his passing, after pressure from the youth and intervention from Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, Omanhene of Kwahu, directed the matter to the Asiedu Boafo Family for resolution.
Following his destoolment and subsequent death, disputes continued. The Queen Mother of Akwasiho, Nana Serwaa Brakatu II, along with some family members, filed a case at the Kwahu Abetifi Palace in December 2024, but the suit was dismissed with costs awarded against them.
As part of the settlement process, the Oyoko Family formally endorsed the retraction document. However, Nana Aboagye Nketia II has suspended all funeral rites for the late Nana Obeng Darfoh II, including his 40-day observance, until the retraction is fully acknowledged and respected.
“Any invitations previously extended regarding the 40-day funeral observance of the late chief should be disregarded. A new date will be communicated in due course,” the statement emphasised.
The Krontihene called for calm, urging the public and sympathisers to await official communication while reconciliation efforts continue.
