Ghana has achieved a major diplomatic breakthrough as the United States has lifted the visa restrictions imposed on the country in July 2025, restoring five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular benefits for Ghanaians.
The announcement was made on Friday, September 26, by Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in a statement posted on his official Facebook page.
He disclosed that the decision was communicated directly to him by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker during a bilateral meeting with Ghana’s delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“Big win for Ghana! The US visa restrictions imposed on Ghana have been reversed. Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges,” Ablakwa revealed.
The reversal follows months of high-level diplomatic talks between Accra and Washington. In July this year, the US government—under the Trump Administration—restricted Ghanaian travellers to three-month single-entry visas, citing concerns about visa overstays, especially by Ghanaian students.
The decision is being hailed as a positive sign of strengthened relations between Ghana and the United States. Analysts say the restored visa privileges will significantly benefit students, business executives, and frequent travellers, opening doors to expanded opportunities in education, trade, and cultural exchange.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the development as a renewed vote of confidence in Ghana’s partnership with the US and a milestone in the country’s diplomatic engagement on the global stage.
