President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a powerful address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, calling on world leaders to confront what he described as “crimes being committed against Palestinians in Gaza” without hesitation or euphemism.
In one of the most direct interventions of the session, the Ghanaian leader criticised the reluctance of the UN and its members to name the atrocities unfolding in Gaza.
“For nearly two years, and for fear of reprisal, we here in this General Assembly have been playing hide-and-seek with language to find the right words to help us avoid or excuse what we all know is taking place there.
But here’s the thing: it doesn’t matter what you call it; if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, well then… it must be a duck. The crimes in Gaza must stop,” he declared.

President Mahama said the humanitarian situation in Gaza could no longer be brushed aside, stressing that hundreds of thousands of innocent Palestinians were enduring “collective punishment and forced starvation” simply because of their identity.
He reaffirmed Ghana’s recognition of the State of Palestine since 1988, restating his support for a two-state solution as the most viable path to peace. He dismissed claims that such a settlement would amount to rewarding Hamas, insisting instead that it represented the only way to secure justice and dignity for civilians.
Mahama also condemned the recent decision to deny visas to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his delegation, calling it a dangerous precedent that threatens the integrity of the United Nations system.
“When we deny the leader of a people a seat at the very table where their fate is being discussed, we undermine the very principles upon which this body was built,” he cautioned.
The President acknowledged wider global challenges, including rising nationalism, economic instability, and the erosion of multilateralism, but emphasised that Gaza represented a moral test for world leaders.
“The suffering in Gaza is not a marginal issue. It is a test of whether this Assembly can still speak truth to power and act in defence of humanity,” he said.
