Mahama Set to Nominate Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Next Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama is set to nominate Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s next Chief Justice, JoyNews has learnt.

According to JoyNews’ Legal Affairs Correspondent, Kwaku Asante, the President has formally written to the Council of State to seek its advice on the nomination.

The move follows the dramatic removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office for stated misbehaviour, based on findings by a constitutional committee established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 2025, when Justice Torkornoo was suspended. Currently the most senior member of the Supreme Court, he was appointed to the apex bench in June 2008 by former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Profile of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie

  • Date of Birth: December 26, 1956
  • Education: Attended Goaso Local Authority Primary School, then Konongo Odumase Secondary School for both O’ and A’ Levels.
  • Legal Training: Studied Law at the University of Ghana and Ghana School of Law; called to the Bar in 1983.
  • Judicial Career: Served as Circuit Court Judge (Kumasi), High Court Judge (Duayaw Nkwanta), and Appeals Court Judge before elevation to the Supreme Court in 2008.

If approved, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will formally assume leadership of the Judiciary at a critical moment, tasked with restoring stability and trust following the unprecedented removal of his predecessor.

The Council of State is expected to give its advice to the President in the coming days, after which Parliament will vet the nominee for final approval.
