Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has argued that poverty, and not the rising cost of living, poses the greatest threat to Ghana’s future.
The former education minister said unless Ghana confronts poverty head-on with bold and innovative solutions, the country’s long-promised transformation will remain elusive.
“President of Ghana means that you have a mindset that tells you that things can be better than what I’ve inherited or what I see today.
If I ask anybody on the street what the greatest challenge facing Ghana is, a number of them will talk about the cost of living. At the end of the day, I conclude that the greatest threat facing this nation is poverty, and that we have to be frontal with it,” he said on Joy News’ PM Express on September 16.

Dr Adutwum reflected on Ghana’s lost opportunities, questioning why factories established in the 1960s had collapsed while countries such as Singapore, once behind Ghana, have surged ahead.
He cited Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, who, after visiting Ghana in 1963, recognised the country’s vast resources but chose to prioritise education and human capital development for his nation.
“He knew clearly that education was what was going to change Singapore, but not just any education—STEM education at the foundation, built on it with engineering and innovation. Then before you know it, you have a country that is emerging out of poverty,” Dr Adutwum said.
Outlining his presidential vision, the MP for Bosomtwe said his ambition is rooted in fighting poverty through radical education reforms that empower Ghanaians with innovation, critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication—skills he described as the “four Cs”.
“We need to be able to look at age-old problems with a new set of eyes and devise solutions that we’ve never seen before,” he stressed.
