Akufo-Addo Gov’t Was Complicit in Galamsey-Felix Kwakye Ofosu Alleges

Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has accused the previous Akufo-Addo-led government of complicity in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face programme on Tuesday, September 16, he alleged that the former administration failed to genuinely address the menace, instead allowing party and government officials to profit from it.

“The previous government completely failed to address it. I have said it, and I will repeat it — that government was complicit in galamsey. Their party hierarchy was involved,” he claimed.

Mr Ofosu referenced the report by former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, which he said implicated high-ranking government and party officials in illegal mining operations.

“Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who they themselves chose to lead the fight, has a report which is damning and shows the involvement of government officials and party officials,” he said.

He further alleged that galamsey became a key source of funding for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“He [Frimpong-Boateng] has gone on record to have said that galamsey was a major source of finance for the NPP. So it was little wonder that they were not interested in fighting it,” Mr Ofosu stressed.

According to him, Ghanaians were right to reject the Akufo-Addo government at the polls.

“Ghanaians were right to throw them out in the manner that they did. Ghanaians showed righteous indignation, and it is right that they did so,” he added.
