Do I look Like A Supreme Leader? – Mahama Dismisses 3rd-Term Speculation

President John Dramani Mahama has rejected claims that he plans to push for constitutional amendments to extend Ghana’s presidential term limits in order to run for a third term.

Speaking at the Presidential Media Encounter at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, the President laughed off the suggestion, describing it as unfounded.

“Look in my face. Do I look like a supreme leader?” Mr Mahama quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.

The President’s remarks came in response to questions about whether his so-called “legacy term” might encourage him to seek an extension of the current constitutional provision.

“That is, to paraphrase Prof. Atta Mills, do I look like a cat hunter? Do I look like a supreme leader? I’m a Democrat through and through. And even when we attained two-thirds of Parliament, I said that we are not going to use it to ride roughshod over the minority. We were going to give opportunity for democracy to flourish. So we had no intention of using that two-thirds majority to steamroll our democracy,” he said.

Ghana’s 1992 Constitution restricts presidents to a maximum of two four-year terms, a provision that has been widely regarded as a safeguard of the country’s democratic stability.

President Mahama reaffirmed his respect for this constitutional order, stressing that attempts to alter term limits for political advantage weaken governance structures and threaten national progress.

He emphasised that his administration remains focused on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting accountability, and ensuring that Ghana’s constitutional framework continues to serve as the foundation for political stability.

“I am committed to constitutional democracy. Any effort to weaken our institutions for personal or partisan gain undermines our progress. Ghana’s democracy is stronger when we all play by the rules,” he stated.
