Ridge Hospital Assault: Nurse Suffered No Fracture or Shoulder Dislocation – Probe Committee

The ministerial committee set up by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to investigate the assault at Ridge Hospital has concluded that there is no medical evidence to support claims that Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a rotation nurse at the facility, suffered a shoulder dislocation during the incident.

Presenting its findings to the Health Minister on Wednesday, August 27, the committee’s chairman, Dr Lawrence Ofori-Boadu, explained that although the nurse reported injuries a day after the August 18 assault, medical assessments showed no signs of fracture in her left wrist or dislocation in her right shoulder joint.

“Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, who is a rotation nurse, reported her injury to the hospital a day after the incident on the 18th of August and was further treated. There was no evidence of fracture on her left wrist or dislocation of her right shoulder joint as documented by the medical records. She has, however, been treated and given pain relief, recommended for bed rest, and received psychological support care,” the report stated.

The committee’s findings contradict claims made by the nurse, who had earlier alleged that the assault left her with a shoulder dislocation. The clarification follows the circulation of a viral video showing relatives of a patient clashing with staff at Ridge Hospital’s emergency department, sparking outrage and renewed debate about the safety of frontline health workers.

In response to public pressure, Minister Mintah Akandoh ordered the establishment of the investigative committee to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.

Beyond the committee’s findings, the case has now entered the courts. Rejoice. Tsotso Bortei has filed a civil lawsuit against social media personality Ralph Saint Williams, popularly known as Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian. She is demanding GHS 7 million in damages for alleged physical assault and defamation linked to the incident.

The Ridge Hospital assault has triggered strong condemnation from professional bodies, with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) and other stakeholders calling for improved protection for healthcare workers.
