National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has moved to quash mounting speculation about President John Dramani Mahama’s political future, making it clear that the party has no plans to present him for a third term.
Speaking during a media engagement, Mr Asiedu Nketiah stressed that the NDC remains fully committed to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which bars any president from serving more than two terms in office.
“We have never run our party in ways that conflict with the national constitution, and we don’t intend to do that,” he declared. “We will stick by the tenets of the Constitution.”

Mr Nketiah’s remarks follow weeks of political chatter surrounding who might emerge as the NDC’s next flagbearer when President Mahama completes his current mandate in 2029. Names of several senior party figures have surfaced in public discussions, including that of the NDC Chairman himself.
But Asiedu Nketiah urged caution, warning that any premature jostling for power could destabilise the current administration and distract from its achievements.
“The party has not declared anything,” he noted. “I keep repeating my caution that we have to be very careful about the way we express our ambitions. Whoever succeeds President Mahama will ride on the achievements of the current government.”
He cautioned that individuals positioning themselves too early for succession risk undermining President Mahama’s ability to govern effectively.
“If you conduct yourself in ways that will disrupt the activities of this government in ways that will make the government less successful, then you have a bigger problem,” he warned. “President Mahama is only about eight months in office now, and you want to struggle to decide who will replace him—you know what it can cause.”
Mr Nketiah pointed out that while names will always be floated in political circles, it is important for party leaders, especially those in sensitive roles, to exercise restraint and avoid fuelling unnecessary speculation.
“If all of us decide today that, ‘Well, people say I can be president, so let me start organising,’ then everybody will be going across the country appointing campaign coordinators. How do you think that President Mahama can focus on achieving anything?” he asked.
The NDC Chairman’s intervention is being seen as an attempt to steady the party ahead of what is expected to be a smooth transition in 2029. By closing the door on talk of a Mahama third-term bid, Mr Nketiah has reassured the public of the party’s respect for democratic governance, while also signalling that internal succession processes will be handled in an orderly fashion.
