Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has officially become the first aspirant to submit nomination forms in the race for the party’s 2028 flagbearer slot.
On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Agyepong arrived at the party’s headquarters in Accra with a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters and sympathisers to hand in his completed forms, signalling the start of what promises to be a highly competitive contest.
The NPP opened nominations for the presidential ticket on July 29, 2025, with the process scheduled to close on August 28, 2025. The party has set January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries, which will determine who leads the party into the 2028 general elections.

In a related development, the NPP has announced a significant expansion of its voter register for the upcoming primaries.
A circular signed by Mr William Yamoah, Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee, confirmed that additional categories of officials and dignitaries will now be eligible to cast their votes. The update aligns with Article 13(1)(11) of the NPP Constitution and a resolution passed at the party’s National Annual Delegates Conference on July 19, 2025.
