The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia by-election, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, has likened himself to the biblical Joshua, declaring that he has been chosen to continue the development vision of the late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
Drawing from scripture, he noted that just as Moses began leading the Israelites to the Promised Land but Joshua was chosen to complete the journey, he has stepped in to finish the late MP’s mission for Akwatia.
“I know Ernest Kumi was passionate about developing Akwatia. He wanted real transformation, and that is the exact mission I intend to fulfil if given the mandate,” Mr Asumadu told constituents.

He added, “I am the Joshua of our time. As Joshua led the Israelites to the Promised Land, I have been chosen to lead Akwatia to its own promised land. I am a man of action, not just words. Everyone who knows me can testify to that. I do not have to depend solely on the common fund to assist my people. My commitment is to bring progress to Akwatia, opportunities for the youth, and development for all.”
The by-election, triggered by the sudden death of Mr Kumi on July 7, 2025, has been scheduled for September 2.
Mr Asumadu has expressed confidence in victory, vowing to secure a 10,000-vote margin over his main opponent, Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
