The candidates comprise 207,381 males and 254,259 females, representing a marginal increase of 1,029 candidates compared to the 460,611 who sat for the exams last year.

The 2025 WASSCE also marks the fourth consecutive year Ghanaian students are writing the “Ghana Only” version of the exams. The format was adopted in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic to give the country full control over its examination calendar.

Until 2021, Ghanaian candidates wrote the exams alongside their counterparts from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. The shift to the localised timetable has since allowed Ghana to streamline its academic calendar and minimise disruptions.

The WASSCE remains the gateway examination for final-year senior high school students, determining entry into tertiary institutions across the country.
