‘This Is Not The Time for Division or Political Point-Scoring’ – Mahama Urges After Helicopter Tragedy

President John Dramani Mahama has made a passionate appeal for national unity as Ghana grapples with the loss of eight distinguished citizens in the devastating military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

In a heartfelt national address on Thursday night, August 7, the President called on Ghanaians to set aside political, ideological, and social divides, emphasising that moments of national tragedy require solidarity, not partisanship.

“This is not a time for division, speculation, or political point-scoring,” Mahama said solemnly. “It is a time for strength, for empathy, and for the enduring Ghanaian spirit that still stands tall when all else fails.”

The crash, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, claimed the lives of:

  • Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

President Mahama described the deceased as patriots who exemplified service, duty, and devotion to country.

“These eight individuals dedicated their lives to Ghana’s progress,” he stated. “That their final moments were spent in service is a testament to their unwavering commitment. We have lost some of our nation’s brightest minds.”

Mahama urged all citizens, regardless of political persuasion, to honour the memory of the fallen through compassion, decency, and mutual respect, discouraging inflammatory commentary and divisive rhetoric.

“Let our words be of comfort, our actions be of kindness, and our unity be the tribute we offer to those whose lives have been lost,” he said.

As part of the ongoing three-day national mourning, President Mahama announced that an interdenominational state funeral will be held on Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square in Accra to honour the deceased. Memorial activities will include:

  • Evening of Reflections and Memorial on Saturday, August 9
  • Books of condolence at selected ministries and party offices
  • DNA testing in South Africa to assist in proper identification of remains

President Mahama concluded his address with a poignant reflection on the shared loss:

“This is a moment of shared heartbreak, a time to reflect on the preciousness of life, the sacrifices of public service, and our gratitude for those who dedicate themselves to the well-being of Ghana.”

The nation remains in mourning, with tributes pouring in across the political spectrum and from citizens at home and abroad.
