GTEC Shuts Down Nyarkotey University College Over Fake Credentials, Unapproved Programs

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ordered the immediate closure of the Nyarkotey University College of Holistic Medicine and Technology for operating without accreditation and offering unapproved academic programs.

The directive, issued on Friday, August 1, comes in the wake of the arrest of the institution’s founder, Raphael Nyarkotey Obu, along with the registrar and director of the college. The arrests were carried out during a joint operation involving GTEC and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

GTEC revealed that the institution was running an unauthorised Bachelor of Technology (BTech) program in Naturopathy and Holistic Medicine with various specialisations, in clear violation of Ghana’s tertiary education regulations.

In an interview with Citi News, GTEC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Jerry Sarfo, emphasised that the university must halt all operations, including new student admissions and advertising campaigns, until it secures proper accreditation.

“We have asked the institution to shut down and provide evidence of compliance by the 8th of August. They are to cease operations and not admit any new students until accreditation is sorted,” Sarfo stated. “Should they wish to continue operating, they must initiate their accreditation process immediately. We have also asked them to pull down all adverts.”

As part of the sanctions, GTEC has also directed Raphael Nyarkotey Obu to stop using the title “Professor,” insisting there is no credible evidence to support the academic rank. He is further expected to issue a public disclaimer retracting the title.

“We have informed Mr. Nyarkotey to desist from using the title ‘Professor,’ as there is no evidence he earned it,” Sarfo added. “He is also to issue a public disclaimer to that effect.”

GTEC has given the institution until August 8, 2025, to submit all academic records and documentation supporting its claims, warning of further legal action if the directives are ignored.

The shutdown underscores GTEC’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on fake institutions and ensure only accredited institutions operate within Ghana’s higher education space.
