FC Barcelona has officially handed the legendary No. 10 jersey to teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, marking a symbolic moment in the club’s ongoing commitment to homegrown talent. The announcement came on Wednesday, July 17, coinciding with Yamal’s 18th birthday, and was paired with confirmation of his contract renewal until 2031.
Yamal, a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, now inherits a number once worn by iconic figures such as Diego Maradona, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Lionel Messi, who famously wore it for over a decade before his 2021 departure. The No. 10 shirt had been vacant since Ansu Fati—Messi’s immediate successor—was loaned to AS Monaco for the 2024/25 season.
Having previously donned squad numbers 27 and 19, this will be Yamal’s first full season with a first-team starter number, underscoring his elevation to a pivotal role in the senior squad.

Alongside the shirt announcement, Barcelona confirmed that Yamal’s new deal includes a release clause exceeding €1 billion, securing the young winger’s long-term future amidst growing international attention. The extension follows a stellar season with Barça and a breakout campaign with Spain at Euro 2024, where Yamal further demonstrated his elite potential.
“Barcelona is once again betting on La Masia,” the club stated, “and with Yamal, we see the future of our football identity.”
