President John Dramani Mahama has described the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ghana as a historic milestone and a powerful symbol of mutual respect, shared development goals, and South-South solidarity.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Accra on Wednesday, President Mahama said Prime Minister Modi’s presence signifies the deepening of Ghana-India relations and a reaffirmation of both countries’ commitment to global peace, prosperity, and multilateral reform.

“Your visit, Honourable Prime Minister, is both deeply symbolic and real,” Mahama stated. “It reflects the shared values of democracy, development, and international cooperation that unite our people.”

Tracing the roots of the bilateral relationship, President Mahama highlighted that Indian merchants first arrived in Ghana in 1890, and many Indian families have since made Ghana their permanent home.

“Today, many of them are proud citizens of Ghana,” he said.

He acknowledged the significant contributions of the Indian community to Ghana’s economy, lauding them as astute investors in commerce, education, health, and agribusiness.

President Mahama thanked India for its long-standing support of Ghana’s development agenda, referencing several major collaborative projects, including:

  • The Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT
  • The Elmina Fish Processing Plant
  • The Komenda Sugar Factory
  • The Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line

He noted that discussions with Prime Minister Modi earlier in the day focused on expanding cooperation in strategic sectors such as:

  • Agriculture and agribusiness
  • Renewable energy
  • Digital innovation and youth empowerment
  • Healthcare systems strengthening

With the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat based in Accra, Mahama stressed Ghana’s readiness to serve as a gateway for Indian businesses looking to enter African markets. He praised India’s growing global economic stature and said its partnership could help Ghana integrate further into global value chains.

President Mahama ended with a call for deeper, future-focused engagement, offering a toast to enduring ties rooted in mutual prosperity, respect, and a shared global outlook.

“This visit signals the start of even deeper cooperation between our two nations—anchored in shared prosperity and a commitment to building a fairer, more peaceful world,” he concluded.
