Apple is exploring a potential acquisition of artificial intelligence start-up Perplexity AI, aiming to boost its AI capabilities and reduce reliance on Google’s default search deal, which generates about $20 billion annually but now faces antitrust scrutiny.
Top Apple executives, including M&A chief Adrian Perica and services head Eddy Cue, have discussed the possible bid internally, though no formal offer has been made. Perplexity, recently valued at $14 billion, delivers real-time search answers powered by generative AI—an area where Apple is seen as lagging behind rivals like Google and Meta.
Sources say Apple has not initiated talks with Perplexity’s management, and the deal may hinge on the outcome of the ongoing U.S. antitrust trial that threatens Apple’s lucrative partnership with Google.

The tech giant has also considered partnering with Perplexity instead of acquiring it—integrating the AI search tool into Safari and Siri. However, a potential collaboration between Perplexity and Samsung, Apple’s main smartphone competitor, could complicate any deal.
