MTN Ghana Probes Data Breach Affecting 5,700 Customers

MTN Group has disclosed that approximately 5,700 MTN Ghana customers may have been affected by a recent cybersecurity breach, prompting an investigation by the Data Protection Commission (DPC) into unauthorised access to sensitive customer data.

The mobile telecom giant confirmed in a statement on Monday, April 28, that it is working closely with cybersecurity experts and conducting a forensic investigation to determine the extent of the breach and mitigate any potential fallout.

“All affected customers will be contacted directly,” MTN assured, while reaffirming that it remains committed to maintaining the privacy and security of customer data.

The breach, while limited in scope, has triggered heightened concern among users and regulators, particularly in the face of rising cyber threats across the digital and financial services sectors in Ghana.

MTN urged customers to take extra precautions by:

  • Updating their MTN, MoMo, and banking apps
  • Using strong and regularly updated passwords
  • Avoiding suspicious messages or links
  • Never sharing personal credentials such as PINs, passwords, or OTPs

The telecom operator emphasised that protecting customer trust and system integrity remains its top priority. The DPC’s probe will determine regulatory implications, while MTN has committed to ongoing updates as the situation evolves.

The breach underscores the growing need for robust cybersecurity measures across Ghana’s telecom and financial sectors.
