Rashid Pelpuo: Akufo-Addo Gov’t Employed 12,000 People after December 7

The government has launched a full-scale investigation into the recruitment of about 12,000 individuals into the public sector by the former Akufo-Addo administration in the final weeks after its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

This was disclosed by the Minister for Employment, Jobs, and Labour Relations, Rashid Pelpuo, who revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has established a committee to look into the appointments, particularly in light of growing complaints of unfair dismissals and procedural breaches.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Mr Pelpuo stated that he is co-chairing the committee and assured that the panel is working “very hard” to ensure a fair outcome for all affected individuals.

“The president has set up a committee to investigate all the people who are complaining of being sacked unfairly. I’m a co-chairman of that committee,” Pelpuo said.

“In that space of time, after they lost the 2024 elections, they [the Akufo-Addo administration] employed 12,000 people within a week or two in all sectors. We’re now investigating it, and our results will come out soon.”

The committee’s mandate includes evaluating whether due process was followed in the mass recruitment, assessing the motivations behind the appointments, and determining the implications for current public sector workforce stability.

The minister added that the investigation is part of the Mahama administration’s broader commitment to ensuring transparency and merit-based employment in the public sector.

The findings of the committee are expected to influence future decisions on the status of the recruits and potentially recommend reforms to prevent politically motivated appointments in transition periods.
