Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that he personally authorised the arrest of Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Board Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA).
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was taken into custody by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on February 23, 2025, at Kawukudi, near Nima in Accra. He is being investigated over financial irregularities linked to his tenure as Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructural Investment Fund (GIIF).
Speaking in a media interview on March 3, 2025, Dr. Ayine made it clear that the arrest was under his directive.

“Yes, I did,” he confirmed.
He further disclosed that during questioning, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi admitted to a $2 million payment made under his leadership.
“We are still investigating the circumstances of the payment and those who were involved,” the Attorney General added.
Despite the Attorney General’s firm stance, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s legal team insists he is innocent.
“We are absolutely confident that Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi is innocent of whatever allegations have been made against him,” said Kenneth Korankye, a member of his defence team.
He called on investigators to present concrete evidence, adding, “Once they bring their facts, we will respond accordingly.”
The arrest of Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi has stirred political and public debate, with many awaiting further developments in the case.
