Free SHS Will Not Be Cancelled—Deputy Finance Minister-Designate Assures

Deputy Minister-Designate for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has assured Ghanaians that the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy will not be cancelled, stressing the government’s commitment to securing the necessary funding for its sustainability.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, February 24, 2025, the Asuogyaman MP pledged to work closely with Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to ensure the program continues without financial constraints.

“There is no subtle intention to cancel Free SHS. I will support my minister to provide adequate funding for education,” he stated.

Nyarko Ampem clarified that his concerns about Free SHS are not about its funding but rather its implementation. He maintained that the government is open to improving the program based on recommendations from stakeholders.

“If I have any concern about Free SHS, it is not about the funding; it is rather about the implementation,” he explained.

The Deputy Minister-Designate also reaffirmed former President John Mahama’s commitment to the policy, adding:

“President Mahama has made it clear that he will not cancel Free SHS, and I know he is a man of his word.”

His comments come amid discussions at the ongoing National Education Forum, an initiative launched by President Mahama on February 18, 2025.

The forum seeks to engage stakeholders in shaping policies that will enhance Ghana’s education system, including ways to strengthen the Free SHS program.

Nyarko Ampem assured that the government will prioritise education funding and efficiency, ensuring that every Ghanaian child benefits from quality secondary education.
