Gregory Afoko Yet to Be Informed of Court-Granted Bail—Lawyer

Gregory Afoko, who has spent nearly a decade on remand over the alleged murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, has yet to be officially informed of his recently granted bail, according to his legal counsel.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One News’ Charles Owusu Kumi, Afoko’s lawyer, Nana Yaw Osei, disclosed that his client, currently held at Nsawam Prison, was not present in court when the Accra High Court ruled on his bail application on Friday, February 21, 2025.

“Gregory was not in court today when the bail was granted. He’s in custody in Nsawam, and so reaching him almost immediately was impossible,” Osei explained. “As we speak, we have not been able to establish contact with him yet. In the coming days, we will go there and alert him as to what has happened. But at this moment, I cannot tell you whether he has received the message or not.”

The court granted Afoko bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties. This marks his third attempt at securing bail since his trial began in 2015. His legal team filed the latest application on Monday, February 17, arguing that his prolonged detention without conviction was unjust.

Afoko’s case has been a subject of intense public scrutiny and legal battles. He was initially granted bail in March 2019 by the High Court, but it was later overturned by the state, keeping him in custody for nearly ten years.

Legal experts and human rights advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about the length of time Afoko has spent behind bars without a final verdict. With the latest court ruling, his legal team is now working to meet the bail conditions and secure his release.

As the case progresses, all eyes remain on the authorities to ensure compliance with the court’s decision, as well as on Afoko’s legal team to facilitate his long-awaited freedom.
