The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced its intention to appeal a court ruling that ordered the release of withheld West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
An Accra High Court had earlier dismissed WAEC’s application for a stay of execution in a case brought by four students representing thousands of candidates whose results were withheld over alleged examination malpractice.
Despite the legal setback, WAEC has assured that most of the outstanding withheld results will still be released on February 28, 2025, except for those directly involved in the ongoing litigation.

Speaking to Citi News, WAEC’s Head of Legal Affairs, Rev. Victor Brew, confirmed the council’s decision to escalate the matter.
“We are going to repeat the stay of execution application at the Court of Appeal in line with established legal procedures.”
He explained that while WAEC continues to process withheld results, the court ruling would only affect a small portion of the candidates.
“As for February 28, it is for the generality of all outstanding results. These [court-ordered releases] are just a portion of the withheld results. Even as these 10,000 candidates went to court, we are still working, and so the 28th is a date to say that all results would finally be worked on.”
According to him, candidates who are cleared of any wrongdoing will have their results reinstated, while those found guilty of malpractice will have their results canceled.
However, WAEC noted that the release of results for the students who sued the council remains uncertain due to the ongoing legal battle.
“Perhaps the only group of people affected will be those students who took us to court, and we have to respect the court procedure.”
Rev. Brew further clarified that the results set to be released on February 28 will also include candidates who failed to appear before WAEC’s investigative committee for questioning regarding their withheld results.
WAEC has faced criticism in recent years for the frequent withholding of WASSCE results over allegations of irregularities. The examination body maintains that its actions are necessary to uphold the integrity of the examination process and prevent unfair practices.
As the legal battle continues, affected candidates and stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the case unfolds in the Court of Appeal.
