CLOGSAG Members in Northern Region Shut Down Offices Over Strike

Members of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) in the Northern Region have fully complied with the strike action declared by their national leadership, shutting down key offices in protest of Samuel Adom Botchwey’s appointment as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.

A visit to the Northern Regional Department of Births and Deaths on Thursday, February 20, found the office completely locked, with frustrated applicants left stranded. Many of them, unaware of the strike, had no choice but to return home without their certificates.

While the Births and Deaths Registry in the region remained closed, other government institutions saw mixed reactions to the strike.

At the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, some workers continued their duties despite the protest, while employees at the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) indicated that they were prioritizing end-of-month salary processing before joining the strike.

CLOGSAG argues that Botchwey’s appointment is politically motivated and violates a Supreme Court ruling that bars civil servants from engaging in active partisan politics.

The association’s General Secretary, Isaac Bampoe Addo, has called on the Presidency to immediately revoke the appointment.

He warned that if the government fails to act, the strike will intensify nationwide, potentially crippling essential public services.

With no immediate response from the government, the fate of the strike remains uncertain, leaving citizens who rely on public services in limbo.
