A 14-year-old Brazilian boy, Davi Nunes Moreira, reportedly suffered excruciating pain for a week before succumbing to what experts believe was either an allergic reaction, infection, or embolism—after injecting himself with a mixture containing the remains of a dead butterfly.
Authorities in Vitória da Conquista are now investigating whether the teen’s bizarre and fatal act was part of a dangerous social media challenge.
Moreira was hospitalised after experiencing severe vomiting and difficulty walking. According to reports, he confessed to mixing a dead butterfly with water before injecting the concoction into his leg.

Medical experts are examining whether toxins from the butterfly, air bubbles in the mixture, or an infection led to his death.
“We don’t know how he prepared this mixture or the size of the fragments he managed to inject,” said Dr. Luiz Fernando D. Relvas of Hospital Santa Marcelina.
Relvas explained that if air entered the bloodstream, it could have caused an embolism, a blockage in a blood vessel that can lead to sudden death.
As Moreira’s mysterious death makes headlines across Brazil, local police are awaiting autopsy results before determining the exact cause of death.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the boy fell victim to an online challenge, similar to past dangerous viral trends that have resulted in injuries and fatalities among teenagers.
“The investigation is designed to clear up what happened,” a Civil Police spokesman said, emphasising that the full post-mortem report will be crucial in determining whether the teen’s death was accidental or linked to a social media craze.
The tragic incident serves as a stark warning about the dangers of reckless internet trends, as authorities and medical professionals urge parents to remain vigilant about the content young people consume online.
