Government Renews Curfew in Bawku Amid Rising Violence

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has renewed the curfew imposed on Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region following escalating violence and a series of brutal killings.

Effective Monday, February 17, 2025, the new curfew hours will run from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. daily.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the government also announced a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in Bawku and its environs. The statement warned that anyone found in possession of such items would face arrest and prosecution.

The government urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to remain calm and resolve conflicts through peaceful and non-violent means.

The renewed curfew comes in the wake of rising violence in Bawku, where 58 people have reportedly been killed since the re-emergence of the conflict in October 2024.

Between January 25, 2025, and February 14, 2025, four children—ranging from five months to 13 years old—were brutally killed in separate incidents.

  • On January 25, gunmen attacked and killed a 13-year-old boy who was shepherding cattle around the Posum-Singnatinga-Possum enclave, snapping his neck and escaping with the livestock.
  • On February 8, gunmen dressed in military uniforms stormed a residence in Tensungo, killing a seven-month-old baby, a two-year-old child, and their mother.
  • In another incident, a woman’s five-month-old daughter was killed when gunmen attacked her family.

The Bawku-Bolga-Tamale highway remains a danger zone, with daily gun battles between combatants and frequent attacks on travellers.

In a related move, the Ministry of the Interior imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Walewale and surrounding communities in the North East Region on February 15, 2025, following a series of violent attacks and killings along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.

The directive, also signed by Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, enforces a curfew from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the Bawku conflict shows no signs of abating. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while urging all factions to work toward lasting peace.
