Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama is carefully balancing technical expertise with loyalty in his key appointments.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show, Mr. Gbande explained that the president’s decision-making process involves a careful evaluation of both competency and allegiance to the administration’s broader goals.
He emphasised that those appointed must not only be qualified but must also align with the president’s vision for governance.

President Mahama has faced criticism from some grassroots supporters over his appointments, with certain factions expressing their dissatisfaction through protests. Addressing these concerns, Mr. Gbande remarked that such reactions are neither new nor unexpected.
“It’s not news, nor a novelty. This happens regularly in government,” he stated. “Whenever these situations arise, we engage with the grassroots, explain the rationale behind these decisions, and ensure people understand the President’s perspective.”
Mr. Gbande highlighted that this approach represents a shift from previous administrations, where public engagement was often limited.
“We are now consistently engaging with the grassroots, helping them understand our direction and why certain decisions are being made,” he concluded.
The administration’s efforts to maintain transparency and dialogue with its base aim to strengthen party unity while ensuring the government operates effectively with skilled personnel in key roles.
