VIAVI Validates Nokia’s Massive MIMO Radio for Upper 6 GHz 5G-Advanced

VIAVI Solutions Inc. . has announced the successful validation of the over-the-air (OTA) performance of Nokia’s Massive MIMO radio operating in the upper 6 GHz frequency range.

This development marks a significant milestone in expanding mobile network capacity to support 5G-Advanced and future 6G networks.

As the demand for 5G applications grows, existing spectrum allocations are nearing their limits. To address this challenge, operators are expected to increase their Time Division Duplex (TDD) mid-band spectrum holdings in the latter half of the decade.

The allocation of the upper 6 GHz spectrum, providing up to 200 MHz of additional mid-band TDD spectrum per operator, was agreed upon at the World Radio Conference 2023.

Nokia and VIAVI conducted a proof of concept at Nokia’s Otava lab in Oulu, Finland, to test the performance of the AirScale platform in the upper 6 GHz band under real-world conditions. The system under test included a 128TRX Massive MIMO radio, based on Nokia’s AirScale Habrok platform, configured within the n104 band (6425–7125 MHz).

To ensure the reliability and efficiency of Nokia’s Massive MIMO radio in this new spectrum band, VIAVI deployed its industry-leading NITRO Wireless test solutions, including:

  • TM500 Network Tester: Used globally by network equipment manufacturers for early-stage functional, system integration, capacity, performance, and regression testing of base stations.
  • OneAdvisor 800 Spectrum and Signal Analyser: Verified downlink signal transmission, conformance testing, and comprehensive 5G channel analysis, including RF characterisation, beamforming, timing, and synchronisation.

The following key test cases were validated:

  • Spectrum analysis and peak throughput validation for one Component Carrier (1CC) and two Component Carriers (2CC) with downlink and uplink Carrier Aggregation (CA).
  • Performance and capacity validation with hundreds of emulated User Equipment (UEs) using real-world data traffic applications.

This proof of concept builds on previous lab and field trials conducted by Nokia, further validating the OTA performance of its Massive MIMO radio in the upper 6 GHz band. The findings reinforce the technology’s ability to support future 5G-Advanced and 6G deployments.

“VIAVI is honoured to have been selected for such a groundbreaking milestone in wireless technology,” said Manuel Mato, Regional Vice President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at VIAVI. “As the industry continues its evolution from 4G to 5G and beyond, VIAVI remains committed to partnering with network equipment manufacturers and operators at every stage.”
