Nitiwul accuses gov’t of military intimidation

Former Defence Minister and Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, has accused the government of deploying military personnel to intimidate citizens, including himself.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, February 12, Nitiwul disclosed that armed military personnel had been trailing his movements in recent times, sparking concerns over the state of democracy in Ghana.

“They are using soldiers to intimidate Ghanaians, including myself, and that is not democracy,” he lamented.

His revelation follows a controversial military raid on the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, an incident that has ignited widespread outrage and speculation regarding political persecution.

The operation, which saw heavily armed soldiers storming Ofori-Atta’s home, has heightened fears that state security forces are being weaponised to silence political opponents.

Despite mounting public outcry, the government has remained largely silent on both incidents. However, critics, particularly from the opposition, argue that these actions form part of a troubling pattern of militarised intimidation against political figures.

As Ghana continues its journey as a democratic state, concerns over the role of the military in political affairs remain a critical issue. The unfolding events have sparked urgent calls for transparency and accountability to prevent the erosion of democratic principles in the country.
