Ken Ofori-Atta declared wanted: “Let him carry his own cross”- Vincent Assafuah

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has publicly dissociated himself from the legal challenges facing former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has declared Ofori-Atta a wanted fugitive, citing allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption during his tenure.

Speaking to EIB’s Ibrahim Alhassan, Assafuah made it clear that Ofori-Atta must face the consequences of his actions without expecting political intervention. “Let him carry his own cross,” he stated, emphasising that accountability should take precedence over political loyalty.

The OSP is currently investigating four major cases linked to Ofori-Atta’s tenure as finance minister:

  1. National Cathedral Procurement Scandal—This case involves allegations of financial mismanagement and procurement breaches related to the controversial National Cathedral project.
  2. Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) Contract—The probe focuses on a multi-billion-cedi contract signed between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and SML under Ofori-Atta’s leadership.
  3. ECG-Beijing Jao Contract—Investigators are scrutinising the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Jao for loss reduction and network improvements.
  4. Health Ministry’s Ambulance Procurement Deal—Authorities are examining payments related to a contract awarded to Service Ghana Auto Limited for the procurement and maintenance of 307 ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.

Ofori-Atta’s current whereabouts remain unknown, but law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing leads to track him down. The unfolding investigation marks a significant moment in Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts, with the OSP demonstrating its commitment to holding public officials accountable for their actions.
