Visa Unveils ‘Tap to Add Card’ for Seamless Digital Payments in South Africa

Visa has introduced a groundbreaking feature in South Africa that allows cardholders to add their contactless payment cards to digital wallets with a simple tap on their mobile device.

Dubbed Tap to Add Card, this innovation eliminates the need for manual card entry, enhancing both convenience and security.

In a statement on Tuesday, Visa highlighted the significance of the feature, stating:

“Tap to Add Card eliminates the cumbersome process of manual entry, a common source of errors and a vulnerability exploited by fraudsters seeking to compromise sensitive card information.”

The system works by generating a unique, one-time code validated through Visa’s Chip Authenticate service. This ensures secure card credential provisioning, offering a faster and safer alternative to traditional card entry methods.

Contactless payments have surged in popularity across South Africa, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when consumers sought to minimize physical contact with payment terminals. The trend has continued post-pandemic due to its ease of use and speed.

Visa South Africa’s head, Lineshree Moodley, emphasised the impact of Tap to Add Card, saying:

“This feature will help drive further adoption of digital wallets in South Africa by addressing key security concerns and simplifying the user experience.”

Visa noted that the feature offers advantages across the payment ecosystem:

For Cardholders: A faster and hassle-free way to link their cards to digital wallets without manually entering card details.

For Banks (Issuers): Reduced risk of provisioning fraud, fewer customer service queries, and improved transaction approval rates.

For Digital Wallets: Enhanced security and a higher token provisioning rate due to minimised card entry errors.

Since its initial rollout in September 2023, the Tap to Add Card feature has gained traction globally, and Visa expects similar success in South Africa. By mimicking the ease of in-store contactless payments, the feature is poised to accelerate digital wallet adoption in the country.

With this innovation, Visa continues to push the boundaries of secure and frictionless digital payments, ensuring a seamless experience for South African consumers and financial institutions alike.
