Ivy Heward-Mills Demands Justice for Late Husband, J.B. Danquah-Adu, After Nine Years

Nine years after the tragic assassination of former Abuakwa North MP, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, his widow, Ivy Heward-Mills, has accused Ghana’s Parliament of neglecting its duty to seek justice for her late husband.

In an emotional outcry, she condemned the legislative body’s silence, highlighting its failure to bring closure to the case.

In a series of Facebook posts on Monday, February 10, 2025, Mrs. Heward-Mills directly addressed Speaker Alban Bagbin, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and all Members of Parliament.

She questioned why the institution her husband dedicated his life to had turned a blind eye to his unresolved murder.

Mrs. Heward-Mills contrasted the inaction in her husband’s case with the swift justice served in similar instances elsewhere.

She pointed to the 2016 murder of British MP Jo Cox, whose killer was arrested, tried, and sentenced within five months. She lamented that despite her husband’s murder occurring in 2016, there has been no conclusive resolution to the case.

She emphasised that her husband was not just another name on Parliament’s records but a dedicated public servant and a patriot.

“My husband was not merely a number on the records of the Parliament of Ghana—he was a man of principle, a legislator who fought for his people, a patriot who served his country in ministerial capacity; he believed in the sanctity of Parliament and the power of democratic governance. He was a devoted father of two little girls whom he was raising to be proud of his patriotism.”

Mrs. Heward-Mills expressed deep frustration at how Parliament has seemingly moved on as though his death was inconsequential. She warned that his fate could befall any other sitting MP if urgent action was not taken to ensure justice.

On the night of February 9, 2016, J.B. Danquah-Adu was attacked and fatally stabbed multiple times at his residence in Shiashie, Accra, around 1:45 a.m. Investigations led to multiple arrests, and court proceedings began, but nearly a decade later, the case remains unresolved.

While successive governments have promised action, no concrete resolution has been reached, leaving many to question the commitment of the justice system to address politically motivated crimes.

Mrs. Heward-Mills urged lawmakers to act decisively before a full decade passes without justice. She emphasised that the delay not only disrespects the memory of her late husband but also undermines the integrity of the nation’s legal and political institutions.

Her calls for justice have reignited public discourse on the safety of public officials in Ghana, as well as the efficiency of the judiciary in handling high-profile cases. Many Ghanaians are now demanding that the government take concrete steps to ensure justice is served and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As the ninth anniversary of J.B. Danquah-Adu’s murder passes, the spotlight remains on Ghana’s Parliament and the justice system. The lingering question remains: Will his family and the nation ever see justice for his brutal killing?
