President Mahama Dismisses Keta Port Director Amid Project Delays

President John Dramani Mahama has relieved Dr. Alexander Adusei of his duties as Director of the Keta Port, a project that has remained stagnant since its initial announcement.

Dr. Adusei, who was appointed in 2019 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, was responsible for overseeing the development of the port in the Volta Region.

However, despite its designation as an official project site in 2018, tangible progress has been minimal, leading to growing frustrations among residents and stakeholders.

Although no official reasons have been disclosed for Dr. Adusei’s dismissal, it is widely speculated that the failure to advance the Keta Port project played a major role in President Mahama’s decision. The lack of visible infrastructure after years of planning has been a contentious issue, particularly during the 2024 election campaign.

During his campaign, Mahama strongly criticised the previous administration, describing the stalled project as a wasted opportunity.

He argued that after eight years, not even a single structure had been erected at the proposed site, despite earlier promises.

In 2018, the Akufo-Addo government officially designated Keta as the site for a new port under an Executive Instrument.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) was tasked with overseeing its development, with expectations that the project would enhance economic activities in the Volta Region.

However, years after its announcement, the port remains undeveloped, and no significant construction has taken place. This has led to mounting concerns from local communities and industry players who had high hopes for the project’s economic potential.

In August 2024, six private investors expressed interest in partnering with the government to develop the facility. However, no firm agreements have been reached, further delaying the commencement of construction.

With Dr. Adusei’s dismissal, stakeholders are eager to see whether new leadership will bring fresh momentum to the project. The Mahama administration is expected to announce a new director soon, with hopes that the long-awaited development of Keta Port will finally begin.

As residents and investors await concrete action, the government’s next steps will be crucial in determining the fate of the project and restoring confidence in the initiative’s future.
