George Opare Addo to Step Down as NDC National Youth Organiser

George Opare Addo, Minister for Youth Development and National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced that he will not seek re-election for his party position in the next NDC executive elections.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Newsroom on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, Opare Addo stated his intention to step aside when his current term ends.

He emphasised that while there is no legal requirement for him to resign from his party role, he has made a personal decision not to contest for re-election.

“The election is next year, and I will not contest for re-election. So, somebody else will take my place. No law has asked me to resign. If the president asks me to resign from the party position, I will. As it stands now, I will not be the first national officer who has been appointed to government and still holds a position in the party. If I have to do it, I will do it,” he said.

Opare Addo also responded to concerns that the recent appointments of several NDC executives to key government positions could weaken the party. So far, seven NDC executives have been appointed to various roles, including cabinet ministers, chief executive officers of government institutions, and other positions within the presidency.

Despite these appointments, he reassured party members that the NDC remains strong and united. He expressed confidence in the party’s ability to fill any gaps created by the movement of executives into government roles.

“There are 38 of us at the party office. So, if four are taken out, the party has a lot of people to fill the gap. We are not gone; we will still support the party one way or the other when we have to.

“So, the party will not be weakened, that I can assure everybody. We still have a lot of human resources who will fill in for us when we are not around,” he assured.

Opare Addo’s decision paves the way for new leadership within the NDC’s youth wing. His tenure has been marked by active engagement in youth development initiatives and political mobilisation. As the party gears up for its next round of internal elections, attention will now turn to potential candidates who may step forward to lead the NDC’s youth front into the future.

With his confirmation of stepping aside, the NDC is expected to begin discussions on his successor, ensuring a smooth transition within the party’s leadership structure.
