Central Region Police Deploy 120 Officers for Council of State Election Security

The Central Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has announced the deployment of 120 security personnel to maintain law and order during the Council of State election scheduled for Tuesday, February 11.

At a brief inspection of the election venue at the Banquet Hall of the Regional Coordinating Council, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Adu, the Central Regional Police Commander, assured the public of a peaceful and orderly election process.

DCOP Adu stated that the police would enforce a zero-tolerance policy on violence and ensure that all electoral rules were strictly adhered to. “We are fully prepared to provide maximum security. Our officers have been briefed and positioned strategically to respond swiftly to any threats or disturbances,” he said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.

The Council of State plays a crucial advisory role in Ghana’s governance structure. According to Article 89(1) of the 1992 Constitution, it is mandated “to counsel the President in the performance of his functions.”

Articles 89 to 92 outline the structure and responsibilities of the Council. Its membership includes key figures such as a former Chief Justice, a former Chief of Defence Staff, and a former Inspector-General of Police. These individuals are appointed by the President in consultation with Parliament.

Additionally, the Council consists of the President of the National House of Chiefs, one elected representative from each region—including the individual to be elected on Tuesday—and 11 other members appointed directly by the President.

With the presence of a significant security force, authorities are optimistic about a smooth electoral process. “We urge all participants to adhere to the electoral guidelines and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a successful election,” DCOP Adu advised.

The deployment of security personnel underscores the importance of the Council of State elections and the commitment of law enforcement to safeguarding democratic processes in Ghana.
