Bawku has been thrown into mourning following the brutal killing of a woman and her two children by unidentified gunmen reportedly dressed in military uniforms.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 10, 2025, in the Tensungo area, just meters away from a military camp in the embattled township.
According to reports, the assailants stormed the victims’ residence around 2:00 AM and opened fire, killing all three on the spot.

The attack is suspected to be linked to the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in the area, which has led to a surge in violence in recent months.
The Assembly Member for the Tensungo Electoral Area, Mohammed Saani, confirmed the devastating event to Citi News, revealing that security personnel had since transported the bodies to the mortuary.
“Around 2:00 AM, a gunman entered a house and killed a woman and her two children. The incident was reported to me, and I immediately informed the police. The military also arrived at the scene, and we transported the bodies to the hospital for medical confirmation,” he stated.
Eyewitnesses claim that the attackers wore military-style uniforms, fuelling fears that they could be impersonators or rogue elements within the conflict. “When I got to the residence, the family alleged that the gunmen were in uniform, and they believe they will return to commit more atrocities,” Saani added.
The latest killings have pushed the death toll in Bawku to 45 since the resurgence of the chieftaincy conflict in October 2024. Just weeks earlier, on January 25, a 13-year-old boy was shot dead in the same vicinity, raising concerns about the worsening security situation.
Tensions in Bawku had briefly eased following a period of relative calm, but this latest attack has reignited fears among residents. Many locals are calling on the government and security agencies to take decisive action to end the bloodshed and restore lasting peace to the area.
Community leaders, civil society groups, and peace advocates have urged the government to intensify security measures to prevent further escalation of violence. Concerns have also been raised over the alleged involvement of individuals in military attire, prompting demands for an investigation into the identities of the assailants.
Meanwhile, security forces have launched a probe into the attack, with a manhunt underway to track down the perpetrators. Authorities are appealing to residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.
